It's a little bit strange to me how people have these deep voyeuristic urges to feel what it’s like to live on the edge. It seems that often, the more removed from the edgy, raw danger of the street they themselves grow up, the more powerful the pull to feel that danger. Is this just because as humans we have a primal need to experience what we don’t know? Or maybe it’s because being safe, comfortable, always warm in winter and cool in summer and being able to go wherever and do whatever you want is boring.

I love irony. How ironic that the very people you want to be able to feel, would trade lives with you at the drop of a hat, only to find themselves too bored to long stay away from life “on the street.”

Great work Suzanne! Profound, personal, real. It made me think of the Joni Mitchell song "Blue", about your proximity to danger. Thanks for sharing this with us.

"...I have the strange urge to reach out and touch him, just to know if his skin, being that he is human, feels the same as mine." --Wow. Perfect. Moving.

I know what you mean-when everything is too perfect and too plastic; it is just not quite real. Better to have it mixed up. Thank you for writing!

Great post!

Reminds me of why I always liked living in NYC & Brooklyn - no matter how meaningless the day job or lousy my love life or empty my pockets, I was in NYC and somehow 'in on the action.'

So, when are you a closet columnist?
