What a perfect description of your Main Street apartment! I felt the same way while living there and think it was one of the best places we've ever lived. I also feel similarly about renting instead of owning... I want to surf, volunteer at my daughter's school, take trips, and work as little as possible. A mortgage--especially a San Francisco mortgage-- would keep me in an office all day and probably up a lot at night. As far as weekends... well, forget surfing or any quality time with Ava. Great blog post Suzanne!

I think you're on to something, especially as I sit here living in a non-owned home while my house in Jacksonville stands empty. Although, for me, there is something about owning a piece of land (not necessarily a house) that is reassuring somehow. Like you'll always have a place to be.

Great post, Suzanne! Yep, ownership does have its downside(s)--unless one could be wealthy enough to hire ALL the maintenance and cleaning to be done by others (=help others, help the economy, help the self). Some cooking would be nice, too, I do reckon. This is my first owned-home (paid for, thanks be to the gods). In it for thirteen years now; but a house is like a purse: the bigger it is, the more it holds, and the more it holds the more there is to take care of. Mine has finally taught me--and it's taken me nigh on to 67 years to learn this about myself (let alone ADMIT it!) --that I just flat-out DON'T do 'grown-up'....

In the end, in what matters--the joy of life--I guess you and your sister aren't very opposite after all.

Wave on your way down to Baja, shug.

We're in a similar position in Brooklyn. Except our neighbors are our best friends, when I hear them it makes me smile. Every night they come down for tea. We could but a comparable apt for say 550,000 and Matt could go back to work putting Sadie in daycare etc. Or we could stay in our ugly wood paneled place 1 block from Prospect Park where I can enjoy the illusion of being to up and decide to join the circus any day.

If it weren't for the neighbor factor, I would defintely rent. Having a house is the equivelant of two children-they always need something. And the bigger the house-the more time they need. Our house is on the smallish side but when you ignore it for a month, it looks like the Biltmore of cleaning and maintainance. But the neighbors are another story...

When I was married to my ex-husband we lived in a beautiful duplex-an old two story house with hardwood floors-two blocks from the university. It was beautful right up until the day that the two dance students moved in upstairs-those hardwood floors were wonderful for dance! And when Larry was living part-time in Burlington, he had a loft in an old mill that he loved-until school started and he discoved the captain of the soccer team living next door. You guessed it-big rooms and long halls-the soccer ball had no boudaries. And half of the team was there most evenings.

But I am a noisemaker too. My favorite neighbor was in Dallas-when I moved back from Colorado, we got to the apartment we had rented around 10:00 pm. It was February and cold, even in Dallas. We decided just to unload a few basics and leave the rest until morning. I had on boots and my first trip up the stairs I was met by my neighbor who asked me if I could put on different shoes-I would wake the baby. I told her that my shoes were all packed up, we were just unloading a few basics (including my sleeping 3 year old) and that we would be done shortly. On my next trip up, I discovered that she had deposited a pair of white Keds two sizes too large that she clearly intended for me to change into to complete my car unloading.

Maybe I will go back to renting-I live the freedom of it, especially after 30 years of home ownership. Perhaps I will rent a house (or a cabin!)
